Modern Peranakan Cuisine at INDOCAFE – The White House

INDOCAFE - The White House

14 January 2013, Singapore – Tucked along Scotts Road after Sheraton Singapore in a colonial black and white house is INDOCAFE – The White House where you get to enjoy modern Peranakan Cuisine, fine coffee appreciation and cultural performing arts.

The restaurant accommodates 38 in the main dining room while an addition 20 can sit in the al fresco section.   There are also two private dining rooms available which seats six and four.

For appertisers, you have a choice of Bok Nee (a dish of Black Fungus and Chicken Salad), Kueh Pie Tee (Top Hat Pastry Cups), Roti Babi (Nonya-style Deep-fried Spiced Pork Sandwich), Ngoh Hiang (Five-spice seasoned Meat Roll), Nyonya Sashimi Salad, Jumbo Tiger Prawn Fritter Salad or the Kerabu Maine Lobster.   Indulge in the traditional Peranakan soup favourites such as the Itek Tim (Salted Preserved Mustard Green and Duck Soup), Hee Peow T’ng (Peranakan Fish Maw Soup) or Kiam Hu Kut and Tahu T’ng (Salted Fish Bone and Beancurd Soup).

There is a plethora of vegetable, meat and seafood dishes for the mains to choose from.  What caught my eye was the Ayam Goreng Lengkuas (Galangal Fried Chicken), Orh Man Tu Kar (Stewed Pork Knuckle with Yam), Kari Oh’Tu (Kurobuta Belly Curry) and the Seafood Assam Nanas Pedas (Stewed seafood in Spicy Pineapple Gravy).

Appetizers start from S$11, while the main dishes start from S$16 and desserts from S$8.

A premium variety of single origin Indonesian coffee can be readily enjoyed with each meal including the 100% Kopi Luwak which are beans of coffee berries that have been eaten and excreted by the Asian Palm Civet.  But be prepared to fork out S$48 for a cup of this rare coffee.  Less expensive alternatives are available – Sumatra Mandheling, Java Arabica, Aged Sumatra Mandheling or the Mandheling Long Berry which costs between S$12 and S$14 a cup.

A selection of teas. fresh juices and coolers are also available and if you prefer something more intoxicating, you can enjoy a glass of white, red or champagne is available.
