15,000 Supporters at Singapore’s First Night Pink Dot

1 July 2012, Singapore – Last night at 8pm, Hong Lim Park was lit in pink, by over 15,000 Singaporeans who came together to support the first ever Night Pink Dot, an annual event to celebrate the Freedom To Love. The first Pink Dot in Singapore was organised in 2009 with the aim to raise awareness and foster deeper understanding of the basic human need to love and be loved, regardless of one’s sexual orientation.

Every year, the event has attracted thousands of straight and Lesbian, Gay, Bi and Transgender (LGBT) Singaporeans dressed in pink, to come together at Hong Lim Park to create a giant pink dot. Many would come in their customized pink shirts with words to express their support for this cause.

This gathering lets visitors enjoy the performances in the park, make new friends and appreciate a day without prejudice against one’s sexual orientation. Because of the positive response from event, Pink Dot started with 2,500 supporters in 2009 and has grown its supporters by more than 50% every year with over 15,000 supporters this year. Pink Dot has also inspired many of such similar events around the world.
