19 September 2011, Singapore – 50 elephants from the open-air art exhibition in aid of Asian elephant have been adopted by ABN AMRO from the Elephant Parade Copenhagen. Elephant Parade Singapore 2011 is the first Asian stop of the Elephant Parade.  From 11 November 2011, these elephant statues will be on display along Orchard Road, Marina Bay, Singapore Zoological Gardens, Botanic Gardens and VivoCity, waiting patiently for new owners to claim them.    They will finally be auctioned off by Sotheby’s at a grand auction gala in January 2012, with part of the proceeds going to The Asian Elephant Foundation and the Wildlife Reserves Singapore Conservation Fund.

Celebrity artists and designers such as Ketna Patel, John V Hamersveld, Henry Holland, Dick Lee and Max Kong have confirmed their support for Elephant Parade Singapore 2011.  They will paint and decorate the life-sized fibreglass baby elephants for the Singapore installation of the Elephant Parade.  Their participation brings the Singapore herd to more than 150 elephants, surpassing the original target by fifty percent.

These new artists join the ranks of previously announced international headliners including Rupert Grint, Solange Azagury-Patridge, Joss Stone, Paul Smith and Karim Rashid.

Fans can also purchase limited edition hand-painted replicas in miniature sizes ranging 10cm to 75cm.  They are hand-painted by professional artists from Chiang Mai in Thailand, and are available for sale at The Elephant Parade Gallery Store at TANGS or online at www.elephantparade.com/shop during the duration of Elephant Parade Singapore 2011.

“The support for our cause has far exceeded our expectations since we first began in 2007 with a small herd of 50 elephants in Rotterdam. We are extremely excited and proud to have ABN AMRO, as well as these renowned artists and distinguished individuals join us in our fight to ensure that the Asian elephants are around for decades to come,” says Mike Spits, co-founder of Elephant Parade.

Jeroen Rijpkema, Chief Executive Officer, ABN AMRO Private Banking International said, “Given our strong commitment to sustainability, we are keen to play our part in the fund-raising activities to preserve the future of the Asian Elephant. At the same time, we are also very excited to present the biggest open-air international art exhibition in Singapore and Asia, having seen the huge successes of previous parades in key European cities.”

Added Lee Chang Tze, Head of South East Asia, ABN AMRO Private Banking Asia, “There was never a doubt that this eye catching and colourful visual art display would be a perfect platform for us to continue connecting with the community at large in Singapore and support the arts scene whilst underscoring our long term business commitment to Asia”.
Professor Tommy Koh, Patron of Elephant Parade Singapore 2011, added, “The enthusiastic support we have received from all over the world for Elephant Parade Singapore will go a long way in our conservation efforts for the Asian elephant.”

Last June, I was in London and Elephants invaded London as well.  You can read about it here.
