22 April 2011, Kuala Lumpur – If you recalled, November last year, Sir Richard Branson of Virgin Group lost a bet to AirAsia Group CEO’s Dato’ Sri Dr. Tony Fernandes last year on the sidelines of the 2010 Bahrain Formula One Grand Prix when Tony’s Team Lotus came out tops.
Tony after winning the bet with Richard last year commented “There has been a fantastic spirit of competition between us and Virgin Racing all season and one of the first people to come and congratulate us on the pitwall was Richard. We have had this great bet running all season and now it’s time for Richard to start preparing himself for some hard work and the likely pain of a pair of high heels! We agreed last night that we will run an online charity auction for the seats on our Kuala Lumpur / London route to raise money for a charity of Richard’s choice and give fans of both teams the chance to be on the flight. The date of the flight will be announced very soon and the aim is to raise as much money as we can for a good cause so the discomfort Richard will go through is worth as much as it possibly can be!”
It would be interesting to see Richard in a red and sexy AirAsia female attendant uniform and be an AirAsia crew for a day strutting down the aisle to serve coffee, tea or any other food or beverage to Tony Fernandes and 250 other guests on the special 13 hour KL bound flight.
Choosing the actual day for this flight seems to be challenging, having changed a few times. The first round Richard ruptured a ligament after colliding into a teenager on the ski slopes in Switzerland; that’s how the story goes.
Five months after the colourful evening in Abu Dhabi, the day of reckoning for Richard was determined to be on 1 May 2011 on board AirAsia Flight D7 08 from London’s Stansted to Kuala Lumpur’s LCCT.
Today AirAsia issued another press release rescheduling the charity flight to 4 July 2011, citing difficulty of obtaining accommodation in and flights into London caused by the influx of people visiting London over the long bank holiday weekend and Royal Wedding.
For people who have purchased tickets for the original day of the charity flight on 1 May 2011 on AirAsiaGo.com will be given a full refund or the option to transfer their booking to the new date.
Tickets onboard this special AirAsia charity flight are available at GBP4,500 for a round trip, while flights and accommodation packages start at GBP5,000 for a single accommodation and GBP5,200 for twin sharing.
If you are flying on charity flight, you can enjoy entertainment by world-class acts such as UK’s DJ Jarren C who will spin at the pre-departure event at Stansted and DJ Dan Healy, who has entertained at after-parties for Alexander McQueen, Matthew Williamson, Jay-Z, and Justin Timberlake.
Spellbinding street magician Sav the Deceptionist will also be on board to entertain guests throughout the journey. Formula One Legend, Eddie Jordan, better known for his driving prowess and making Formula One World Champions out of Damon Hill, Nigel Mansell, Michael Schumacher, and Ayrton Senna will have his band, ‘Eddie & The Robbers’ on board the charity flight as well. A host of other performances including stand-up comedy, live DJs complete the line-up of acts that have been arranged for the charity flight.
Guests, who can’t be on the flight, but would like to be part of the event can purchase tickets to the Charity Cocktail Party on 2 May, 2011. (We could not get confirmation at time of publishing whether the dates for this Cocktail Party remains on 2 May) Tickets, priced at GBP350 are available on www.AirAsiaGo.com.
Shave a Knight’s Legs from GBP400,000
On 18 April this year, AirAsia also announced in another press release that Tony managed to convince Richard to shave his legs before he gets on the AirAsia Charity Flight for GBP400,000. Bidders must have a confirmed ticket for the charity flight or to the Charity Evening. Bidding will take place at the pre-departure event in Stansted. The successful bidder would be invited to shave Richard once he’s unveiled as an AirAsia flight attendant, in front of the world’s media and guests.
After all, how many people get the chance to shave the legs of a Knight of the British Empire!!
All proceeds collected from the sale of the charity packages, limited edition merchandise and special collector items, including personal items from Dato’ Sri Dr. Tony Fernandes and Sir Richard Branson will be channeled towards Virgin Unite, the non-profit foundation of the Virgin Group.
