21 January 2011, Singapore – HSBC’s involvement in the sport of Golf globally will be offering golf enthusiasts two major tourmanents within two months.   The Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in the Middle East is happening this week from 20 to 23 January 2011 while the HSBC Women’s Champions will be back in Singapore from 24 – 27 February at the same venue as the last 3 years at Tanah Merah Country Club Garden Course.

The world’s best women golfers will be in Singapore to vie for the increased prize purse of US$1.4 million.   Will last year’s winner, Japanese Ai Myazato be able to keep her title as the champion of the HSBC Women’s Champions tournament this year?

The Marketing Campaign
This year’s advertising campaign by advertising agency JWT showcases insights on the champions and knowledge surrounding the tournament in a fresh and engaging way. The players will remain as the key focus, with those closest to them furnishing little nuggets of information and insights into their lives.   This reinforces the brand idea of how HSBC provides customers a platform to discover a world of opportunities by providing them a chance to get closer to the international golfing elites such as Ji Yai Shin, Paula Creamer and Michelle Wie.

This year, HSBC has utilized the print, broadcast and outdoor mediums including buses, trains, billboards and digital platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, mobile applications, online banners and a specially created microsite.  This through-the-line campaign includes on ground activities such as the HSBC Golf ‘Live’ Challenge held from 21 – 23 January 2011.

Jun Fukawa, Executive Creative Director of JWT Singapore said: “With this campaign, we set out to deliver a fresh perspective to the HSBC Women’s Champions tournament that has never been seen before, using people from every facet of the game to unlock the richness of women’s golf”.

He added: “For the HSBC Golf Live Challenge event, we are allowing people to actually experience Tanah Merah’s Hole 8 – one of their signature holes – right at Ngee Ann City on Orchard Road. It’s an exciting way for the public to participate in the tournament.”

As a prelude to the Women’s Champions, HSBC  invites everyone, golfers and non-golfers to Ngee Ann City Civic Atrium at Orchard Road this weekend to try out their latest augmented reality iPhone application, HSBC Golf.   HSBC has turned Orchard Road into a virtual golfing green by setting up 8 golf holes here giving the public a chance to win S$10,000 in HSBC’s Multi Currency Savings Account or one of 10 attractive runner-up prizes including LG DVD Players, vouchers from TaylorMade-adidas golf, Fairmont hotel and M1.

I was at the media preview held on the first day together with other official bloggers Angela, Holly and Fazillah.  While I was busy snapping away with my Sony Alpha A33 DSLR, the girls had a great time trying out the iPhone application and you can read about their experience in their blogs.  Among some of the other activities that I witnessed included a photo session with the youth players from the HSBC Women’s Champions Qualifying Tournament 2011.

When you enter the huge tent in the atrium area outside Ngee Ann City, you would need to register to loan an iPhone handset to play the 8 holes. The objective of the game is to get as low a score as possible for the 8 holes.
