27 May 2011, Singapore – 5-man member band, Simple Plan made an appearance today at the Ritz Carlton after their Japan tour and before making their way back home. They were last in Singapore in 2008 for SingFest. Their last impression of Singapore was that Singapore is an environment to have a good time and that they partied too much, got hungover and that it was too hot. Simple Plan is made up of Pierre Bouvier on vocals, Chuck Comeau on drums, David Desrosiers on bass and backing vocals, Sebastien Lefebvre on guitar and backing vocals and Jeff Stinco on lead guitar. These carefree young men were dressed in Ritz Carlton Millenia Singapore’s bathrobes during the press conference. While resting comfortably on bean bags and addressing members of the media today, I got a first hand experience with them. Extremely unassuming and friendly, these Canadian boys had no airs and were very approachable.
Their latest 11 track album “Get Your Heart On” arrives on 21 June 2011 with an all star lineup of vocals such as Natasha Bedingfield, Rivers Cuomo, All Time Low’s Alex Gaskarth and Somali-Canadian rapper K’Naan. This new release in over two years was produed by Brian Howes (Boys Like Girls, Skillet, Hinder). Simple Plan will be celebrating the release of this album with a special album release concert at New York City’s Gramercy theatre on 21 June. They will perform in Europe in early June at multiple festivals and sold-out headlining dates in Paris, London and Hamburg. After which they will be performing as a featured artist at this year’s Vans Warped Tour at the Dallas Gexa Energy Pavilion on 24 June.
Having achieved worldwide sales in excess of 7 million, with releases including 2002’s RIAA 2x platinum debut “No Pads, No Helmets … Just Balls”, 2004’s platinum-certified follow-up ‘Still Not Getting Any” and 2005’s “MTV Hard Rock Live”. Their last album, 2008’s “Simple Plan” hit the number one spot on the iTunes Store’s “Top Pop Albums” chart and also scored top 3 successes in Mexico, Brazil, Japan and Canada. The album also premiered in the top 10 in Hong Kong, Sweden, Austria, Switzerland, Australia and Germany with top 20 debuts in Spain, Finland and France.

Jet Lag which features Simple Plan’s first duet with a female guest vocal, Natasha Bedingfield, has been airing on Singapore radio. This song addresses the toll that distance can take on a relationship while Astronaut is about feeling isolated and longing for someone who understands you. These are examples of how Simple Plan has stretched itself lyrically, retaining the emotional relatability that is the band’s trademark, while showcasing how dedicated they are to the craft of songwriting. Chuck describes Astronaut as “a special song for us …. one of our favourites and most important song for me,” where “the whole world is so different from me …. feeling alienated”
Summer Paradise is aptly named to describe the sentiment of people from cooler climate nations who would like to get to somewhere warm during the cool wintry season, and the sad feeling when leaving to go back to the cold weather after meeting someone special. The lyrics “I’ll be there in a heartbeat”, “how can you show me paradise when I’m leaving”, “someday I will find my way to where your name is written in the sand” and “summer paradise with you” demonstrate this sentiment and feeling.
The last track in this new album entitled “This Song Saved My Life” about the emotional power music can have in one’s life has captured the sentiments behind the thousands of fan mail the band received at its Montreal headquarters each month. The band’s vocalist Pierre Bouvier shares that “these letters are pretty overwhelming and humbling at the same time so we wanted to somehow pay homage to those fans. We were sitting there going, ‘I don’t know, what do you think they would say?’ and Chuck says,’Why don’t we just ask them'”. Chuck comeau poster on his twitter feed “We decided to write a song about you guys …. can you tell me how our music has made you feel through the years?” From the responses they received, Bouvier and Comeau constructed their first song ever written entirely via twitter. 25 of their fans from around the world also contributed to the chorus singing ‘this Song saved my life” in parts of the song. With lyrics such as “trapped in a hole where everyone hates me” and “I was broken, choking, lost, bleeding ……. this song saved my life”, this song encapsulates how people use music to cope with life and sometimes music saves lifes.
