Garuda Indonesia Picks London Gatwick over Heathrow

Airline - Garuda Indonesia

7 February 2013, Jakarta – Indonesia’s national airline Garuda Indonesia will operate direct flights between London and Jakarta through Gatwick from the fourth quarter of 2013.    Garuda Indonesia will fly six times a week on its Boeing 777-300 Extended Range aircraft which can carry over 300 passengers.  The airline’s brand new B777-300ER will be equipped with Wi-Fi and a chef on board for First Class passengers.

Gatwick Airport is UK’s second largest airport and the busiest single-runway airport in the world.  Serving more than 200 destinations in 90 countries for around 33.8 million passengers annually on short- and long-haul point-to-point services, Gatwick Airport is a major economic driver for the South-East region, generating around 23,000 on-airport jobs and a further 13,000 jobs through related activities.   Gatwick is 28 miles south of London.

Garuda Indonesia currently  flies the Jakarta – Abu Dhabi – Amsterdam route.  It hopes that the Jakarta – London direct flight will open up direct access from South East Asia to Europe and vice versa.    The airline will also be flying to Auckland and Brisbane this year.
