24 November 2012, Singapore – W!ld Rice’s annual Christmas pantomime, Hansel & Gretel is is now on at Drama Centre Theatre from 22 November 2012 to 15 December 2012.
The brother and sister team is played by Dwayne Tan (Hansel) and Denise Tan (Gretel). We particularly enjoyed Siti Khalijah’s role as Vilma and Nicki Minah. Her versatile Filipino and Malay accents add more excitement and humour into a night of fun and entertainment for both adults and children alike. Sebastian Tan plays the Chef, Dwayne Lau plays Steven the father of Hansel and Gretel while Vernetta Lopez plays Cassandra the potential step mother of Hansel and Gretel.
Hansel and Gretel gets neglected when their father and new pop-star wannabe stepmother. She decides to let them go in the jungles of Mandai to fend for themselves because the family budget is too small for four of them. Hansel & Gretel stumbles upon a house made of fishball sticks fences, kueh lapis walls, kaya toast roof tiles. Watch the plot unveil as Hansel and Gretel try to get out of the troubles of the Chef as their father stop making goo-goo eyes at their step mother and start looking for them.
The production is a rather interactive one with many opportunities for audience participation. Overall, the production is cute and brings back memories of current affairs.
Robinson Group of Stores is the presenting sponsor. On opening night, the beneficiaries from the Business Times Budding Artists Fund (BTBAF) were invited to amongst the first to enjoy the pantomime. They include some 200 children and their families from the Little Arts Academy who also got to mingle with the cast after the show.
