River Safari Singapore To House Giant Pandas Jia Jia & Kai Kai

15 August 2012, Singapore – Scheduled to open the end of 2012, the latest addition to Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS) portfolio, the River Safari, will be housing two Giant Pandas from China named Kai Kai (凯凯) and Jia Jia (嘉嘉).

The two Giant Pandas will be arriving on 6 September 2012 via Singapore Airlines Cargo Boeing 747 freighter and are expected to touch down at Changi Airport at 8.20 am.

The cabin temperature in the flight will simulate that of the pandas’ natural habitat in Sichuan. A team of keepers and vets from both China and Singapore will accompany them to ensure their well-being.

Singapore Airlines is the Official Airline for the giant panda collaborative programme between Wildlife Reserves Singapore, parent company of the River Safari, and the China Wildlife Conservation Association.

Besides transporting the Pandas to their new home from China, Singapore Airlines and SilkAir are also providing air tickets for training and exchange programmes involving zookeepers, veterinarians and researchers from both Singapore and China.

Kai Kai and Jia Jia, will be housed at the Yangtze River zone of the upcoming River Safari, along with other endangered wildlife from China such as the Giant Salamander and the Red Panda.

With less than 1,600 Giant Pandas left in the wild, Kai Kai and Jia Jia will be in Singapore for 10 years as part of a joint collaboration between China Wildlife Conservation Association and WRS to raise public awareness on wildlife conservation and develop a breeding programme for these endangered animals.

Kai Ka and Jia Jia will be ready to meet visitors to the River Safari at the Giant Panda exhibit opening in December 2012.
