20 July 2012, Singapore – Tucked away in a corner of Orchard Central shopping centre, Covelli Italian Bistro and Wine bar is not your typical pedestrian restaurant. Despite its secluded location, it is still within a very central shopping mall, which also houses other famous food brands like Dean & Deluca, Kuriya Penthouse and Spageddies, to name a few.
The food in Covelli was excellent. Every dish left a wow on our palate and we immediately understood why it was considered a hidden gem. We had the Antipasto Fruitti di Mare (S$18) for an appetiser which consisted of seared Tataki Tuna, cured Salmon, Crabmeat and Avocado topped with Avruga Caviar and Balsamic Reduction. Its presentation is as beautiful as its tasted. The combination of the fishes and crab, with the drizzle of sweet and sour, made it perfect.
We moved on to the fragrant Black Truffle Ravioli (S$20). You can smell the truffle as the dish is being served. This ravioli is filled with Black Truffle and Cheese, served with Brown Butter cream sauce and sprinkled with grated Hazelnuts.
The main course of seafood was a Barramundi e Astice (S$28), which is Barramundi with Charcoal Lobster served with Baby Spinach in Gewurztraminer cream. This was spectacular. The fresh pan roasted Barramundi was great but it was the Charcoal Lobster that stole the show. It looked a little unsightly at first, but once you bite into the crispy yet juicy charcoal coated lobster, you immediately forget and forgive it for its looks.
A good alternative to the seafood main course is the Quarantaotto (S$32), which is boneless Beef Short Ribs, slowly braised for 24 hours and served with Truffle mashed potato. The meat is soft, succulent and flavorful.
Covelli is an ideal location for events and gatherings. It occupies 3,000 square feet and has a seating capacity of 80, plus an impressive wine bar for pre or post dinner drinks.
As part of the Singapore Food Festival 2012, and aligning with its seafood theme, Covelli has whipped up an interesting dessert – Squid-Ink Meringue and Sea Urchin-Mango Cheese Mousse. To try this savory mousse of sea urchin mixed with mango flesh and cheese, sandwiched between light, airy and sweet squid-ink meringue, visit Covelli at the Singapore Food Festival Village, Waterfront Promenade at Marina Bay, Stall No. 27 from now till 22 July 2012, 11am – 11pm daily.
