25 May 2012, Singapore – Audi Star Creation, an asia-wide fashion design competition promoting and developing emerging Asian fashion talents, is spearheaded by the Textile and Fashion Federation of Singapore (TaFf) and supported by FJ Benjamin. There were a total of 255 entries from 13 participating countries.
Last week at the Audi Fashion Festival, three winners from the twelve finalists were announced at the Audi Red Carpet night where a short fashion show by the designers was presented.
This year’s competition theme was “Fashion Without Frontiers”. Entries from aspiring designers with less than two years’ experience in the fashion industry were received before 31 January this year. Each entry had to consist of six original and previously unreleased designs for judging. This year’s seven judges include Mr. Mario Boselli, President of Italian Chamber of Fashion and Milan Fashion Week, Mr Douglas Benjamin, CEO of FJ Benjamin Singapore and Co-Creative Director of Raoul, Mr Reinhold Carl, MD of Audi Singapore, Ms Angelia Teo, Content Director, Asia Pacific, WGSN, Mr David Wang, VP of Textile and Fashion Federation of Singapore, Ms Jo Soh, Designer and Owner of Hansel Productions and Mr Colin McDowell, Creative Director of Audi Fashion Festival 2012.
The three winners of this year’s Audi Star Creation each walked away with a S$10,000 cash prize from Audi Singapore and a one-year attachment with fashion retailer FJ Benjamin, as well as a chance to launch a capsule collection at Star Creation 2013.
Minister of State for Trade and Industry, and National Development Mr Lee Yi Shyan presented the awards to the winning designers.
27 year old Chinese designer Roderic Wong (Liang Wang) won the award for his womenswear collection Tissue of Being. The judges were impressed with Roderic developing his own fabric. Roderic was also awarded the Audi Young Designer Award with an additional S$10,000.
Roderic draws on various felting techniques to create textures and build three-dimensional shapes on wool without having to use stitching. Roderic uses white as his main colour and clean shapes to allow the textures to stand out.
Roderic studied fashion design at Donghua University for two years after realising fashion was his calling. He then enrolled at Raffles Design Institute (Shanghai) and is now in his final year. Previously he studied computing in New Zealand.
23 year old Thai designer Soravit Kaewkamon’s menswear collection Love and Friendship was visually impactful with the embroidered feathers
Soravit’s collection is inspired by her belief in the advantages of living in a tightly knit community, which includes the spirit of cooperation and looking out for one another. She uses smooth shapes, defined cuts and strong structure, fashioned after unisex cuts popular in the 1990s as well as materials such as woven fabrics and leather that gives her androgynous pieces a masculine edge. She also incorporated some patterns and prints inspired by the hornbill, a symbol of friendship. She has won several fashion design competitions in Thailand, including two awards at the Saha Group Bangkok Young Designer Awards 2010 and a win for her menswear collection at SINGHA LIFE 2011. She has a degree in Decorative Arts from the Silpakorn University in 2011.
32 year old Korean designer Ko Young Ji’s womenswear collection Li Jin drew on the traditional blues, greens and pinks of a saekdong and merged them with the Western fabric resulting in a collection that came across as commercially very viable.
Young Ji’s grandmother was a hanbok designer. She first heard of Li Jin, the very first court dancer of Joseon Dynasty-era Korea who moved to Paris to pursue her passion in the arts, in a novel she read. Ko studies at France’s l’Ecole Superieure des Arts et techniques de la Mode (ESMOD). She decided the dancer would form the inspiration of her collection.
Ko’s crations have been retailing at Korean multi-label shops since 2010.
