Mothers’ Day Gift Ideas – Cookbooks For You to Cook With Her

Asian Recipes
Cook with Mum this Mothers' Day

9 May 2012, Singapore –   Do you or your mum love to cook?  Mother’s Day is just around the corner and we have a suggestion of how both you and mum can bond together in the kitchen.  Try out new recipes or go get the ingredients together and cook up a meal this Mothers’ Day.   After all mums love it when they get to spend quality time together with the kids.

We recommend three recipe books published by Marshall Cavendish this Mothers’ Day.  But if cooking is not really your thing, check out our recommendations of places to bring mum and the family out for a celebratory meal.

The Best of Chef Wan

The Best of Chef Wan - A Taste of Malaysia - Marshall Cavendish Cuisine
The Best of Chef Wan - A Taste of Malaysia

Learn from Malaysia’s Culinary Ambassador and Asia’s most notable chef, Chef Wan.  He started cooking at the age of 13 where he used to assist his aunts and neighbours at weddings and special occasions, learning as much as he could from the adults.   The Best of Chef Wan comes packed with his 138 recipes including most of his favourite Malaysian dishes.   The recipes include home-cooked favourites as well as popular street food.  The book is split into 6 food sections – Meat, Poultry, Fish & Seafood, Salads & Vegetables, Rice & Noodles and Soups.  Chef Wan has written these recipes so that you can whip up the dishes with little effort, given these days, we do not have the luxury of time to cook an elaborate meal.

One of the dishes I have tried from The Best Of Chef Wan include Chicken Pongteh (Ayam Pongteh Degan Taucu).  Yummylicious!

Peranakan Heritage Cooking by Philip Chia

Part of the Singapore Heritage Cookbook series, Peranakan Heritage Cooking expreses the soul of the Peranakan community.  Cooking has been kept alive and continues to evolve because of the passion and dynamism of a younger generation of chefs and writers and also the general public’s interest in the flavours of Peranakan food.

While the book introduces the Peranakans with a short history, and explanation on the traditions, arts & culture, cuisine, and architecture and design, the recipe section offers you insights into some of your favourite Peranakan dishes from the pastes, vegetables and salads, meat & poultry, fish & seafood, soups, rice & noodles to snacks & desserts.

I have tried the Itek Tim recipe and it is ,not surprising, why this dish has always been my favourite.

Malay Heritage Cooking by Rita Zahara

Another book from the Singapore Heritage Series, Malay Heritage Cooking by  bilingual television news presenter, anchor and producer Rita Zahara  shares recipes of Malay favourites such as Asam Pedas Ikan, Laksa Johor Nani, Rendang Daging, Mahshi Kobis Hubaba.    There’s also a section on those delicious cookies and cakes.   Imagine baking Biskut Kacang Madu Cornflakes, Biskut Suji or Kek Kukus together with mum and then throwing a tea party for her friends.

I tried the Onde-Onde –  hmmmmmmmm….  absolutely delicious!
