Passenger Movement in March 2012 At Changi Airport On The Increase

25 April 2012 – There were over 4.28 million passenger movements at Singapore Changi Airport last month.  This represents the highest passenger traffic ever handled during the month of March.     This represents a 15.3% increase year-on-year.  Aircraft movement also grew 10.6% to 27,000 while cargo movement decreased 1.8% to 163,000 tonnes during the month.

In the first quarter of 2012, there was an increase of 12.9% in passenger movement compared to the same period last year recording 12.3million passengers.  This was due to the  double-digit growth and strong travel demand between Europe, Middle East, South Asia, Northeast Asia ad Southeast Asia and Singapore.

79,500 aircraft movements was also handled from January to March, up 12.9% year-on-year.  Cargo movements to and from Europe and South Asia dipped while there was increase in movements to and from Southwest Pacific and Southeast Asia.  Some 443,900 tonnes of cargo passed through Changi during the period contributing to an increase of 0.6%.

Changi Airport currently serves some 100 airlines operating 6,200 weekly flights to more than 220 destinations in 60 countries.    Changi Airport welcomed Air France’s A380 inaugural flight to Singapore last month.  Air France is the fourth airline to operate the superjumbo at Changi after Singapore Airlines, Qantas and Lufthansa.

  • China Eastern Airlines and SilkAir launched thrice weekly direct flights connecting Singapore to Wuhan, the capital of China’s Hubei Province.
  • Hainan Airlines begins new service to Taiyuan via Haikou from 11 May 2012
  • These additions will link Changi Airport to 26 Chinese cities
  • Singapore Airlines’ new long haul low-cost carrier Scoot will commence daily flights to Sydney and five-weekly operations to Gold Coast from June 2012
