Mr Lim Kok Kiang, Executive Director of Transport Engineering at EDB Singapore also gave and update on the Singapore aerospace industry at the press conference yesterday.

Overview of the Singapore Aerospace Industry

  • Total Output: S$7.3 billion
  • Value-Added: S$2.8 billion
  • Employment: 18,600

In Singapore, the aerospace industry is made up of 90% maintenance, repair and operations (MRO) and 10% manufacturing. The industry provides good job opportunities of which 9 out of 10 are skilled and 4 out of 5 are filled by locals.

Aviation companies in Singapore offer comprehensive MRO capabilities including business aviation, cockpit avionics, cabin interiors, airframe, APU, engines, thrust reverser, landing gear and helicopters.

The Seletar Aerospace Park is one of Singapore’s development initiatives that is currently work-in-progress.

The Park will be primed for MRO, manufacturing, research, BA/GA and training. Taking up 320 hectares, 75% have been taken up for Phases 1 & 2. The runway has also been extended from 1,592m to 1,836m.

The Business Aviation Complex and Component Manufacturing and MRO Facility are opened.

In January this year, a new air traffic control tower was launched at the aerospace park.

On the education front, there has been a growing number of aerospace graduates here with around 1500 graduates a year in 2011 including degree, diploma and NITEC courses.

Some S$70 million has been pumped into a new postgraduate programme that is jointly developed by MOE, EDB and local universities for up to 200 PhD students. Participating companies include EADS, Rolls-Royce and Thales.
