4 January 2012, Singapore – If you have not already checked out the gourmet antics of ex corporate-events organizer and Madam Tan’s nasi lemak extraordinaire Shen Tan, this should be one of your new year resolutions in 2012.  The chef owner of this modern Singaporean Wok & Barrel opened this cosy restaurant that seats 30  last year.

Shen gives traditional Singaporean food a modern twist with delights such as the Bah Chor Mee pasta a 5 spiced roast pork done confit-style with handmade tagliatelle or the lamb char siew instead of the traditional pork char siew.  More importantly, MSG is not used in the food served here.

During my first visit to Wok & Barrel in September last year, I had the chance to taste some of the dishes including Shen’s famous Nasi Lemak.

And the price point is very reasonable.  The Nasi Lemak Sets start at S$7.90 nett, Pizas from S$11.90 nett and mains from S$19.90

Desserts

Try out Shengdol Delights, Shen’s deconstructed Chendol: Gula Melaka drizzled over smooth coconut panna cotta paired with a scoop of homemade red bean ice cream.  Another favourite is the Puloh Hitam cake that is a spin-off of the sticky date pudding.  The cake is made with black glutinous rice drizzled with Gula Melaka Butterscotch with a scoop of homemade coconut ice cream.   Desserts start from S$7.90.

Drinks & Bar Snacks

If you prefer to hang out with friends, Wok & Barrel offers wine and Australian, Belgian or Japanese beer.  Enjoy the drinks and savour the bar snacks such as Chicken Wings, Rendang, Curry Chicken or The Desiree Pizzas.

Brunch

Wok & Barrel started brunch service last September on Saturdays from 9am to 10pm and Sundays 9am to 3pm. You have a choice of local and western dishes:

Homemade Carrot Cake with sautéed prawns – silkier and softer than the machine-processed carrot cake, fried to give the soft carrot cake an extra crisp.  The carrot cake retains the original sweetness and the flavour of the radish instead of being overpowered by the rice flour.  The homemade sambal belachan gives the fried carrot cake a more wholesome and varied taste. (S$11.90)

Wok & Barrel’s Big Breakfast Fry-Up – Enjoy a hearty set of white or wholemeal toast, roast tomatoes, a choice of poached, scrambled or sunny side-up eggs, baby spinach and a choice of either the Wok & Barrel’s signature sausages or the Kurobuta (Black pork) bacon.   The Wok & Barrel gourmet Sausages are made by Oh Deli and handmade with Shen’s recipe and made only with chilled meat. (S$16.90)

Pancakes with Gula Melaka Butterscotch and Bananas – Enjoy these fluffy pancakes that are drizzled with homemade Gula Melaka Butterscotch syrup with a side of bananas. (S$7.90)

Crispy French Toast – French toast fried to a crisp on the outside, soft on the inside, stuffed with a choice of Nutella, or Homemade Peanut Butter, or Homemade Cashew nut butter, or Bananas. (S$7.90)

Looks like I will be paying a visit to Wok & Barrel with my friends soon again!
