18 November 2011, Singapore – This morning, Sir Elton John was at the 20th World Orchid Conference held at the Marina Bay Sands Convention Centre. He was present to receive the Doritaenopeis I-Hsin Black Jack and Doritaenopsis Ever Spring Diamond which were named in honour of him – the Doritaenopsis Sir Elton John.

This phalaenopsis hybrid belongs to the Harlequin group bearing 9 flowers on each inflorescence. The inflorescences are made up of brilliant flowers that feature distinctive spotting and markings. The striking magenta pattern and large petals combined with an arresting golden forked lip make this orchid hybrid an exceptional talking piece.

Together with him were his partner David Furnish and absolutely adorable son Zachary Jackson Levi Furnish.

A limited quantity, 20 pots, of Doritaenopsis Sir Elton John is available for sale at the 20WOC retail shop for S$280 until 20 November 2011.

Orchid naming is Singapore’s own special way of welcoming important guests. The National Orchid Garden at Singapore Botanic Gardens houses VIP orchids named after state dignitaries such as Paravanda Nelson Mandela and Dendrobium Margaret Thatcher, as well as celebrity orchids such as Dendrobium Jackie Chan and Dendrobium Memorial Princess Diana.
