16 July 2011, Singapore – Red Bull Energy drink needs no introduction to many but did you know that there are many variants of the drink? I only realized it during my recent visit to Sepang for the Red Bull Rookies.
Originating from Thailand, Red Bull was first introduced to Singapore in 1985 where it was the first country outside of Thailand to have the Red Bull bottle. In Thailand, it has always been using the name “Kratingdaeng” and the brand name “Red Bull” was first used in Singapore. Red Bull started the Energy Drink category in the retail trade here.
This energy drink is non-alcoholic and HALAL certified and is all about efficiency allowing you to get more out of what you do, be it studying, driving, working, playing sports etc.
Key ingredients in Red Bull
There are four key ingredients – Taurine, Glucoronolactone, Caffeine and Vitamin Bs.
Taurine consists of Amino acids normally found in your muscles, brain, heart and blood. It helps you regulate stress and body temperature and acts as an antioxidant in removing toxins and waste product from your body.
Glucuronolactone is a natural constituent of your body and helps to improve physical endurance. It also acts as an antioxidant in removing toxins and waste products from your body.
Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system and helps increase overall alertness and focus.
Vitamin Bs contained in Red Bull includes Niacinamide B3, Panthothenic Acid B5, Pyridoxine B6 and Cobalamin B12 which are essential vitamins for maintaining normal physical function. Niacinamide (Niacin) is effective against hangovers.
A combination of the ingredients gives you different effects.
Taurine & Glucoronolactone detoxifies while fructose and sucrose gives the lasting effect (which usually burns off over a two hour period) and Caffeine gives the initial stimulating effect.
Benefits of Red Bull
Scientific tests have been executed to show that Red Bull increases physical endurance, improved and increases concentration and reaction speed, vigilance and stimulates metabolism
Difference between Energy Drink and Isotonic Drink
Energy drinks are meant to energize and vitalize the body and mind while the isotonic drink is a thirst quenching drink meant to restore what the body loses during physical exertion, rehydrate and help the body to achieve electrolytes balance in order to rejuvenate and maintain the body’s active requirement during sports.
In the Red Bull Family in Singapore there are 4 types of packaging distributed by Allswell Trading Pte Ltd.
- Red Bull Classic – gold can
- Red Bull Bottle – the original packaging for Red Bull and manufactured in Malaysia with ore concentrated formulation due to lower liquid content.
- Red Bull Singapore’s Choice which has 20% less sugar and relaunched in Jan 2011
- Red Bull Vietnam (Kratingdaeng)
Red Bull Singapore’s choice used to be the leading SKU in Singapore until it was removed from the market after an agreement with Red Bull International. This was relaunched after the separating from RBI. It was formulated for Singaporeans, who aspire to live a healthier lifestyle, with 20% less sugar but with the same functional effect as Red Bull Classic (400mg G-factor).
There is a separate silver and blue canned Red Bull that is supplied by RBI.
