The Lion King Begins Rehearsals at Marina Bay Sands

10 January 2011, Singapore – For the first time in Singapore, rehearsals for The Lion King start today.  With welcome speeches and self introductions by casts and crew of the Singapore production, Disney Theatrical Group, Marina Bay Sands and Base Entertainment today invited the media to witness this.

Key creators and producers were also present to welcome the cast and crew to Singapore.  John Stefanuik, the Associate Director will work with the cast to realize Julie Taymor’s vision.  Marey Griffith the Associate Choreographer will bring Garth Fagan’s Tony Award-winning dance to life and Clement Ishmael will work with the singers and musicians to join the diverse styles of composers and lyricists Elton John, Tim Rice, Lebo M, to name a few, on stage in the orchestra pit.

The cast of 51, which includes veterans of the acclaimed London and Paris production, comes from 13 countries across 5 continents.  The cast also includes South African members, in keeping with the show’s spirit of authenticity.

Jean Luc Guizonne plays “Mufasa” the great warrior and ruler of the Pridelands

Gugwana Dlamni plays “Rafiki” the wise baboon shaman

Lyall Ramsden plays “Zazu” the horn billed bird

Pierre van Heerden plays “Pumbaa” the carefree warthog

Jamie McGregor plays “Timon, the wise cracking meerkat

Jonathan Andrew Hume plays “Simba”, Mufasa’s son

Puleng March plays “Nala”, Simba’s loyal lioness

Lavina Williams, Simon Gwala and Michael Bagg play the three evil hyenas

Lance Reblando, Leon Matawaran and Warren David Saga alter the role of “Young Simba”

Christina De Leon, Mica Torre and Nikki Samonte alternate the role of “Young Nala”

The Young Simba and Nalas are all from the Philippines.
