Nescafe Singapore Karting Championship 2010, Round 3 Race Report
Singapore, 21 July 2010 (Press Release) – Undeterred by the wet conditions at Kartright Speedway last weekend, local race team Drakar Racing showed their usual domination at the third round of the inaugural Nescafe Singapore Karting Championship (SKC) 2010. Drakar’s star Cadet karters Jon Lee and Glenn Chiam, as well as Junior karter Amin Noorzilan have made it to the podium for every round of the National Championship so far and this time was no different.
Winner of the Cadet category in Round 1 and first runner-up in Round 2, Jon Lee was in pole position for the final this round. He made a clean start and got into the lead quickly, but alas, was pursued aggressively by another driver and eventually lost his lead. Lee finished in second place with Glenn Chiam in third.
“I was very happy to have qualified in pole position and I tried my best to pull away as much as I can from the pack in the final. The track was wet from the rain and it was a new experience for us to race under such conditions. It was a pity that I lost my lead, but I will continue to work hard,” said Lee.
All seven drivers who represented Drakar Racing made it to the podium except for Jordan Tay – the youngest driver on the team as well as the youngest participant in the Championship. Tay was involved in a crash during the final laps of the race whilst battling for third place. The nine-year-old cadet was second in the Heats and fourth in the pre-final.
“Since the last round of SKC in May, I’ve been to The Philippines and Macau to participate in the Asian Open Karting Championship (AKOC). It has been a great learning experience competing at the regional level and my confidence has improved largely. I had a shot at the podium this time but sadly, I met with an accident and did not complete the race. I will continue racing in AKOC and hopefully get onto the podium at the next SKC round,” said Tay.
Having finished second in the last round, Amin Noorzilan was determined to fight for the top spot of the Junior category. However, another stronger competitor came up front and battled with the reigning champion instead, leaving Amin to settle for third place. Overall, Amin still remains in second for the Junior Drivers’ Championship title.
Mohammad Nasri Naufal – referred to as Opai – put up an outstanding performance in the rain as he raced to the finish line first. Sean Hudspeth, another Drakar driver, finished after Opai in second place. It was a brilliant result for Drakar with this 1-2 win in the Senior category.
Unfortunately, post-race scrutineering declared Opai and Hudspeth’s karts of technical infringements and their wins were voided.
“It is most regrettable that this had to happen but nonetheless, they are still winners in my heart. Opai displayed a fantastic result and he finished way ahead of everyone else. This is part of racing and we will ensure such things will not happen again,” said Jonathan Tay, team principal of Drakar Racing.
Raymond Low, team director of Drakar Racing, also finished on the podium in the Masters (Rotax Max) category.
I have to personally experience Round 4 of the Nescafe Singapore Karting Championship 2010 will take place on August 28 – 29 at Kartright Speedway.
Prior to that, Drakar Racing competed at Round 4 of the Rotax Max Challenge Malaysia 2010 24/25 July 2010.
